Students will be automatically eligible to join NJHS beginning in the spring of their seventh or eighth grade year following two consecutive quarters of meeting the eligibility criteria set forth in the bylaws.
Once notified about eligibility, eligible students must complete an application packet as detailed in the bylaws. The Faculty Council will evaluate the application packet of eligible members to determine a select group of students to be invited into the Hope Highlands Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.
When invited, students must show completion of the previously announced community service requirement as outlined in the bylaws. Induction of invited members will take place in late spring.
Students wishing to join NJHS must complete an application packet by the designated due date consisting of the following:
The Faculty Council will evaluate completed applications on the basis of the National Junior Honor Society standards of Character, Citizenship, Leadership, Service, and Scholarship.
The Faculty Council’s decision to invite members is considered final. Appeals of invitation can be made directly to Principal Kanelos in a timely manner.
Any student with a question regarding his/her honor roll status or report card grades should see the guidance department. NJHS advisers do not determine Honor Roll status.
Grade six is not included in National Junior Honor Society at Hope Highlands Middle School. The sixth grade students need time to adjust to the middle school and learn how to be academically successful in their new settings. Students must demonstrate academic proficiency throughout their sixth grade school year and continue this success into their seventh grade year. Eligible students will be able to apply to National Junior Honor Society starting at the mid-point of their seventh grade year using community service hours earned since the summer before seventh grade.
Selection Procedure Description
The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Hope Highlands Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a five-member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school.
Students in grades seven and eight are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.36 or better on a 4.3 scale. Each spring those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Form/Two Recommendations and a Letter of Intent that provide the faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. Ten hours of documented community service are also required before nomination along with participation in a chapter project after nomination.
To evaluate a candidate’s character, the faculty council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty and community are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership.
Faculty/community leader input and all Candidate Forms/Letters of Intent are carefully reviewed by the faculty council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.
Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection.
